MORE ABOUT SECURITY SEALS
Security Seals originated centuries ago, in a time when kings and noblemen used wax seals with the signet stamp to ensure that messages arrive unread and parcels remained tamper-free.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, we began to see the development and implementation of mechanical seals to secure rail cars, meters, and bank or courier bags. Originally, seals were manufactured with soft lead, or tinplate steel. As time passed and manufacturing techniques became more complex and efficient , the number of types of seals, evolved into the thousands that are currently available. As better systems of transportation develop, so do the means to ensure that cargo arrives intact at the destination.
Plastics, heavy metal, cable, and wires are used to manufacture seals ranging from simple plastic security seals to formidable iron and steel devices. Modern day security seals now include highly sophisticated electronic devices with remote reading, RFID data recording and monitoring functions, GPS tracking and more. There are also new adhesive labels and tapes sporting holographic images, thermal activated inks, and high-tech printed adhesives that leave an impression and/or destroy a printed pattern if the security tape is removed.
By the 1980s three major categories of seals had been developed:
INDICATIVE SEALS
Also called “tamper-evident” seals, these light duty seals that can be removed by hand or with basic cutting tools. Indicative seals are the mostly used as security seals for utility meters, valves, cabinets, lockers, bins, and cages. Other alternative applications might include being as identification labels for travel bags, luggage or even for patients in hospitals. Our Twist-tight and TM security seal range are all examples of indicative seals.
INTERMEDIATE STRENGTH SEALS
These require a special cutters and require more effort to sever than simple plastic indicative seals. Added strength can help avoid accidental breaking or easy entry, without tools. Some of these may have a metal inlay. Our TruSeal range of Intermediate strength indicative seals include our FX and LR range.
HIGH SECURITY SEALS
Commonly known as barrier seals, these hardy devices are tougher and far more difficult to destroy. Specialised tools are used to sever them. Testing for this category requires resistance to specific levels of pull, bending and crushing, exposure to extreme heat and cold and requires ISO international certification to be considered a high security seal. Examples within our range includes bolt seals, cable seals, TH seals, THL seals and bolt seals.
When complimented with rigorous security protocols all seals will act as a deterrent and will reveal any evidence of tampering. Security protocols include correct application, records for monitoring, registering, control and inspection, and make these seals are very effective. Read more about Security Seals here on Wikipedia.
